With the death of George Floyd in 2020, many liberals pushed hard to defund the police. Floyd’s death was seen as one of many examples of police brutality causing nationwide protests. Groups such as BLM(black lives matter) and Antifa fueled the anger of many communities. These protests were labeled as peaceful by the media but many videos have exposed the chaos and destruction that was caused in every city.
The civil unrest caused the leaders in Minneapolis (where George Floyd was killed) to take action to hold their police department accountable. Soon many cities across the country were looking to disband their police departments. However, this has only led to a spike in crime and a threat to public safety. Many of these liberal communities have had a significant rise in crime over the past months. Lack of support for police has caused many officers to resign or retire.
Now that a year has gone by, and with 2020 being one of the most violent years in the Us in decades, Democrats and liberals are starting to change their mind when it comes to police reform. A soft stance on crime and a lack of consequences only motivates criminals to continue.
Ecclesiastes 8:11 “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.”
According to the Bible, swift punishment helps deter crime. If an individual sees that there are consequences that follow after a crime is committed, he might think twice about proceeding. Crimes such as murder, kidnapping, sex crimes against a child are all punishable by death according to the Bible. If our justice system would abide by this, we would definitely see a decrease in crime.
It’s gotten to the point where now President Biden is calling for local governments to use federal money to fund police departments and hire more officers. A surge in homicides has prompted this change of mind. Even though liberals still want to push for police reform and different methods for deterring crime, they still want to project toughness on crime. We can only wait and see what kind of impact these decisions will have this year.
